課程英文簡介(Introduction to the course in English) This required course designed as a new model for 2 semesters of freshman English teaching and one semester of sophomore's, focuses on learning the language through the association with Chinese teaching, namely, two credits each for both English and Chinese with one credit for shared teaching. There are two features of this new model: first, both English and Chinese are taught along the same themes. Second, the shared teaching hours will concentrate on projects in different forms and activities. The goal of this model of combined teaching aims to help students build up the foundation for communication. In order to 'connect', the norm of listening, speaking, reading and writing will be dealt with in a larger dimension following the first four instructions written by William Cronon: (a). They listen and they hear. (b). They read and they understand. (c). They can talk with anyone. (d). They can write clearly and persuasively and movingly. The feature of the shared teaching will be expanded in the third semester. It on the one hand continues the first year's teaching and learning, on the other hand, it prepares for the presentation and performances to show the results of the previous work in breadth and depth. In the process the issues are pursued in relation to the training of taking social responsibilities for the needs of a community.

■  課程目標及內涵 (Course Objectives and Contents)
Course Objectives:
1. enhance their English listening ability;
2. enhance their English speaking ability;
3. enhance their English reading ability;
4. enhance their English writing ability;
5. enhance their overall English communicative ability; and
6. enhance their knowledge of cultural diversity and international perspective.

The course contents are summarized as follows:
1. learning and using daily-life vocabulary and expressions;
2. reading and discussing multicultural and cross-disciplinary articles and books;
3. listening and responding to authentic and situational audio recordings;
4. engaging in in-class dialogues, group discussions, and/or other speaking activities;
5. writing play scripts, journals, and/or other assignments;
6. performing in-class plays; and
7. developing English learning strategies and effective study habits.
